How can we help?

Find answers to common questions about NoteDock — the native macOS companion for Google NotebookLM.

NoteDock is the best native macOS desktop app for Google NotebookLM. It sits in your menu bar and lets you capture notes, upload any file format, and manage notebooks with folders — all without opening a browser. Think of it as the missing native companion for NotebookLM: global hotkey capture, drag & drop from Finder, local AI preprocessing, OCR, smart chunking, and zero-trust privacy.
NoteDock uses a system-level WebView (WKWebView) — the same rendering engine behind Safari — to let you sign in to Google directly. The login page is Google's own page; NoteDock never intercepts, injects, or proxies it. Your password is completely invisible to NoteDock. Session cookies are stored securely in macOS Keychain, the same hardware-backed secure store used by Safari and Mail.
NoteDock supports far more formats than NotebookLM's web interface:

Documents: PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, TXT, Markdown (.md)
eBooks: EPUB
Images (OCR): PNG, JPG, JPEG, HEIC — text extracted on-device via Apple Vision, fully offline
Audio & Video: MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV, MKV — transcribed locally before upload
Web: URLs with automatic article body extraction

Formats that NotebookLM can't handle natively (like EPUB, Office files, scanned PDFs) are automatically converted or transcribed locally on your Mac before upload. Some formats require the Pro subscription.
NoteDock includes Smart Chunking technology. When a file exceeds NotebookLM's source size limit (approximately 500,000 characters), NoteDock automatically splits it into optimally-sized chunks and uploads them as multiple sources. This is handled transparently — you just drop your file and NoteDock takes care of the rest. Even 500-page books are no problem.
Yes! This is one of NoteDock's key features. NotebookLM's web interface has no folder support — all notebooks are in one flat list. NoteDock adds local folders so you can organize notebooks into a hierarchy, just like Finder.

Group freely — by project, subject, or however your brain works
Drag to rearrange — move notebooks between folders with a simple drag
Works offline — organize your library with or without internet
Partially. You can browse your notebook list, manage folders, and organize your library without an internet connection. File preprocessing (OCR, format conversion, and local transcription) also works fully offline since it uses on-device Apple frameworks.

However, sending content to NotebookLM requires an internet connection since it communicates with Google's servers.
NoteDock is built with a zero-trust, local-first architecture. There is no NoteDock server — your data flows only between your Mac and Google.

Login: Google's official login page via system WebView. We never see your password.
Data: All file processing (OCR, conversion, extraction) happens entirely on your Mac. No server, no cloud, no analytics.
Credentials: Stored in macOS Keychain (hardware-backed secure storage).
Sandbox: Runs inside Apple's App Sandbox with minimal permissions (network + user-selected files only). No full disk access. No contacts. No location.

Reviewed and distributed exclusively via the Mac App Store.
Google NotebookLM's web interface is the full-featured AI research tool. NoteDock solves the 5 biggest pain points of the browser experience:

1. Speed: Global hotkey lets you feed content in 3 seconds instead of 15+, without leaving your current app.
2. Format support: ePub, Office docs, scanned PDFs, and images with OCR are all accepted — the web version can't handle many of these.
3. Reliability: Local AI preprocessing means no more browser upload timeouts or silent failures.
4. Organization: NoteDock adds folder support that NotebookLM doesn't have.
5. Efficiency: Native Mac app with tiny memory footprint vs. a browser tab eating hundreds of MB of RAM.
Your NoteDock Pro subscription is managed through Apple. To cancel:
